Avion Reposado Tequila｜ Other Products

Spirits Review called Avión Reposado one of the more complex and nuanced reposados they'd had — delicious, smooth, and more complex by a long shot. Avión was launched in 2010 by Ken Austin and, famously, written into HBO's Entourage before it existed; Pernod Ricard bought it in 2014, and it's made at NOM 1416, Productos Finos de Agave, in Jesús María in the Los Altos highlands. The Reposado is 100% blue Weber agave from the highest highland fields, roasted slowly in traditional hornitos — clay-and-brick ovens — for around 72 hours, double-distilled in copper pots, ultra-slow charcoal-filtered, and rested six months in oak, bottled at 40% ABV. Spirits Review: the aromatic hallmarks of a good tequila — sweet brine, rosemary, pineapple, Meyer lemon — with cherry, persimmon, nectarine, and hibiscus from the wood, almost an aged cachaça in its ethereal citrus and grassy notes; on the palate, a slightly oily entry with wonderful body, peach, Montmorency cherry, persimmon, and cinnamon, with vanilla, oak, leather, and charcoal from the barrel, a touch sweeter than most from the slow roast. Honest note: it's a big-brand highland reposado built smooth, and the charcoal filtration is a house choice enthusiasts debate — it's also the reposado that made a generation of cocktail drinkers take tequila seriously.
