Ribes viburnifolium, commonly called Catalina Perfume or evergreen currant, is a wonderfully useful California native shrub for dry shade and woodland-style gardens. Its glossy, aromatic leaves release a spicy, resinous fragrance when brushed, making it a pleasure along shaded paths, under oaks, or near seating areas.
This low, spreading evergreen shrub forms a handsome groundcover-like mass, perfect for oak understory plantings, native gardens, slopes, dry borders, and shaded banks where many plants struggle. Small burgundy to reddish flowers appear in season, attracting hummingbirds and beneficial insects, while the dense foliage provides year-round texture and habitat value.
Plant Ribes viburnifolium in shade to part shade with well-drained soil. Once established, it is drought tolerant and beautifully adapted to low-water California gardens, though occasional summer water can keep it looking fuller. Avoid overwatering and give it room to spread naturally. Fragrant, evergreen, and quietly elegant, Catalina Perfume is a superb native shrub for tough shaded spaces.
