Ancient artwork, particularly the Aztecs, has a prominent theme of skulls. It was regarded as a symbol of regeneration and several of their gods were represented by skulls. Many believe that ancient civilizations carved these skulls thousands of years ago. Some believe that they may be relics from the legendary island of Atlantis. Others consider it as proof that aliens visited and influenced the Aztecs. They say that ancients had entered the skulls to await the time when their ancient knowledge would once again be required.

Mayan legend claims that crystal skulls hold the power of life and death, the power to heal or to smite, and the power to create miracles.
